Digital Performance Equipment Loan Program

In order to take advantage of the free equipment loan program, your project
should be affiliated with a 501c3 organization.

Our selection process for the equipment loan program is unique in that we do not focus on the quality
or content of the art, but rather on the interesting or experimental use
of technology; a willingness to take risks and use the new media tools
in the development process
, not just in the final presentation of a piece.

Since this is a loan program, not a rental tha availability of the equipment can
is not guaranteed, no matter what you might feel you have been told. It is therefore, not recommended for use in a
public production. If you wish to use equipment for a public
production, we suggest you rent it from a vendor who can guarantee
availability and backups.

Selected equipment loans are based on
the filled-out equipment loan program form, followed by a conversation
with the artist to establish whether what we have to offer is
appropriate for his/her use and that he/she has a sufficient level of
knowledge to use the equipment. If DPI doesn't have what the artist
needs, then we can offer advice on where he/she might find or obtain
the equipment.

If the artist's equipment loan is approved, equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All equipment must be picked up and returned to the 15 West 26th St, Second
Floor location.

Artists are responsible for transport and care of the equipment during the
loan period.

Artists must show a reasonable level of knowledge of the use and care of
equipment to be approved for the loan program. A simple interview with
a DPI technician
is generally sufficient to establish your qualifications, but a basic
training class on digital tools & projection
equipment is offered three times a year that can provide this
knowledge to new users who need training.

Equipment Loans are an in-kind donation and can/should be included
where appropriate in project and organization budgets. A DPI technician can
assist you in determining the value of an equipment loan.

In exchange, DPI asks artists for:

  • Program Credit -

DPI asks that you credit the loan program in your program,
film credits, and or artist web site.
A credit should read something like the following:

"This production was developed with equipment provided by GSRT’s
Digital Performance Institute – a laboratory for innovative performance
      technology. http://digitalperformance.org
      "

or a similarly appropriate equivalent such as:

    • This production developed with equipment provided by ...
    • This production features equipment provided by ...
    • This site hosted by ...
    • Portions of this film/video edited at ...
    • Media in this Performance/Piece/Film created at ...
    • Technical Services provided by ...
  • Lamp Donation -

Due to the high cost of Projector bulbs, to help maintain our equipment
DPI also requests that you to make a small donation to cover the cost
of a lamp. The real cost of using the projectors is about $0.75 an hour. This is not
a mandatory fee, but your generosity will ensure this program survives. A $25 minimum is recommended. Checks can be made out to Digital Performance Institute.

  • Report -

Participants in DPI’s equipment loan program are asked
to provide a brief report regarding the use of the equipment, or about
the project for which it is used in general for the DigitalPerformance.org
blog. A report can be as short as a paragraph, or as long as the
participant feels useful. Photos to accompany the Blog entry are
    also welcome.
Reports can be sent to hal@digitalperformance.org [1]
If you, need ideas on what to write about consider answering one of our Online Interview Questions [2].
