Ontological-Hysteric Incubator : [WHAT WE SHOULD JUDGE WHEN WE JUDGE...]

[WHAT WE SHOULD JUDGE WHEN WE JUDGE...]
PERFORMANCE: August 20-23 8PM $17/Student $12

Ontological Theater

[WHAT WE SHOULD JUDGE WHEN WE JUDGE...]
LONELINESS, LOSS, REGRET, REDEMPTION:
FOUR(4)(IV)LECTURES ON THE RECALCITRANT HUMAN CONDITION, VIEWED THROUGH THE PRISM OF MODERN ART AS REFRACTED BY THE AESTHETIC OF THE ANCIENTS

On Sensation by Jake Hooker, or The Plastic Arts

Several aspects of writer/director/lecturer Jake Hooker's psyche go to
work attempting to elucidate the subjects of lyric Greek poetry and Roman art, and
something else -- topics very few people care about and he himself
knows almost nothing about. Thankfully, certain rogue elements
intercede on the behalf of theaudience, leading to more personal (and
present) ruminations on loneliness, on loss, on regret, on redemption
--on sensation. A lecture with audio/visual aids.

Created & performed: Jake Hooker
Designed: Tlaloc Lopez-Waterman
Video: Brian Rogers
Produced in association with the Ontological-Hysteric Incubator

Hal Eagar : #13 What is your role?

DPI:

What is your role? There can be a lot of overlap among design elements, particularly media and the interaction between set, lighting, and sound designers

Hal Eagar:

What I'm better at than I wish I were is the stage install effects, and control systems. Very hardware and software. And not totally in the heart of the media. I'm not much into linear editing and don't know the newest editing software in and out, and I really like atomic media assets over linked footage. I mean I like having hundreds of short files to play with as apposed to a 60minute video.  At least until the end of rehearsal and development, then when things are set you start to want a nice long video.

Anyway I was saying that to explain how I'm not a video editor, but what I am is a media manipulator.  Effects, timing, and placement.  But on stage, not on the final cut timeline.

I think I'm a decent animator, but with a narrow style set maybe that limits when that is applicable.  And it's very time consuming, so I don't take on that role in the majority of the work I do, but it's some of the most fun work.

Stanley Update...

So here is some update on Stanley- Last fall Jim gave me a little tutorial on Pro tools, and I have worked with it in my studio, so I can now record new tracks for Stanley as needed.  I used it to have Stanley sing Happy Birthday for a friend.  Stanley rode on his bike through a restaurant to the table and sang the song..Unfortunately I was hoping that it would also allow me to record Stanley's movements separately, but that is not possible as is.

I recently have been concentrating on making him more independent. I bought an FM transmitter, so that I could control Stanley from a distance with the ipod.  But FM transmission does not keep the signal from the L/R channels completely separate, and the loud servo motor control track sound bleeds over Stanley's voice.  So I decided to split the signal at the Ipod.  I had a broken set of wireless headphones- I gutted it and repackaged the receiver into a small box. I made a custom Y-cable that feeds out of the ipod and splits the signal to the FM transmitter (voice), and the wireless transmitter (servo control).  SO now Stanley could be across the room with a radio in his belly and I could play Ipod tracks without touching him.
